Wenger confident of success

Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenge insists lasagne is off the menu tonight for Arsenal’s comeback kings as they look to shatter Tottenham’s Champions League dream again.

The Gunners’ final-day win at West Brom last season dumped their bitter rivals into fourth place – which was only good enough for the Europa League as Chelsea became champions of Europe.

And in 2006, Spurs were pipped on the final day – blaming a virus in their squad on a dodgy lasagne.

Wenger’s lads will send their neighbours into Europe’s second-tier competition next season if they get a win at Newcastle tomorrow.

The Frenchman is confident his team will not throw it away – and that means leaving nothing to chance with the players’ food.

He said: “We always have the same menu before the game and hopefully it will be safe.

“We have shown that we can win these games. We’ll just continue to do what we did until now.”

Arsenal should secure fourth place if tomorrow’s clash goes to form as they have not lost since Spurs beat them at White Hart Lane on March 3.

At the time, Andre Villas-Boas said Arsenal were on a negative spiral but they have picked up 23 points from a possible 27 since to overhaul their neighbours.

And Wenger has hailed his players for doing their talking on the pitch.

He said: “When we were under severe pressure, they didn’t talk and worked very hard together in a united way and that’s why I really want them to be rewarded.”

Wenger has hailed his squad for getting their confidence back after losing Robin van Persie to Manchester United and seeing their form dip as they won just five of their opening 15 league games.

He said: “The resources are there mentally and physically. We have played for a long time under pressure now. Let’s just finish the job.

“This team suffered for a very long time from a lack of confidence because you take the talisman away Robin van Persie and get the new players in.

“Then you lose the first big games and suddenly we are faced with scepticism around the team. You could see that.

"That was the problem and balancing the team took a while, to find a formula to have a good balance in the team. Since this has been back we have been very efficient.”

Wenger believes the 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League last-16 second leg clash on March 13 was crucial to his side’s recovery.

The Gunners went out that night on away goals having lost the first leg 3-1 at home – but their boss felt the victory boosted his players’ confidence.

He said: “The Bayern Munich away game was very important. You could feel after that we could do it. That helped. I never felt this team lacked focus or desire to do well but we lacked confidence for a while.”

Wenger has warned Spurs that there is a massive difference between finishing in the top four and getting dumped into the Europa League.

He said: “The Champions League plays with the best teams in Europe. That is what we want to do.

"The financial consequences are big but that is not the most important thing for me.

“It’s easier to attract the players top, top, top players if you play in Champions League. That’s part of the rule of the market. For us, we want to be with the best.”
